Should I?

The question is whether I should start reading P G Wodehouse?

The thing is I don't enjoy British humor. I don't find it the least bit funny. I'm more the 'Friends' rather than the 'Yes Minister' types, so I'm really not sure I'll appreciate P G Wodehouse.

Do you think I will? Votes in please!

@Moonshine - OK, I know you are a dedicated PG Wodehouse fan. I was expecting an unbiased opinion (given that I don't like British humor) but I was obviously expecting the impossible ;)

I'll wait for more votes to come in!!

Not to sure about PGW. I got saturated with him in school and college. treid re-reading recently. Couldn't. i would strongly recommend Yes Prime Minister though if you like political humour. And the Adrian Mole series. Some of the comedies in BBC entertainment like 'My wife and kids' and 'after you are gone' are nice. Preferred the American office to the British one though. By Miles

BTW don't tell me that you didn't like Four Wedings, Love Actually, Notting Hill ... British Humour :)

@The Knife - Adrian Mole is on my list. I loved the movies you mentioned but then they were all 'chick flicks', and chick flics are universal! They aren't so much British or American as other comedies.

well they weren't in the legally blonde genre...and the nunour was very Brit and understated

Not a big fan of PGW. I've read an entire page of some book of his and didn't feel like proceeding to the next page after that. When you think about it, this isn't really an unbiased opinion either.

However, as far as Brit comedy is concerned, you really must try:

1. Coupling. Waaaaay funnier than Friends. In fact, I think Friends isn't funny at all when you compare it to Coupling.

2. Black Adder - Rowan Atkinson. 'nuff said

3. The Office - alright, this is something not everyone enjoys

If you're looking for books to read however -

4. DOUGLAS ADAMS! - the hitchhiker's guide to the galaxy

5. The Just William series (http://childrensbooks.wikia.com/wiki/Just_William_series) brilliant set of childrens books

6. I hear Terry Pratchett books are good too

I say ditch the Woodhouse and go with the other stuff.

@Ashwin - You seem like a Mr Bean fan. Well, I'm not, so I'm not sure about Black Adder. I've heard Coupling is funny but is it really funnier than Friends?
And I didn't like Hitch Hiker's Guide to the Galaxy. Read the first 20 pages or so but found it so boring, I dropped it. Guess will try once more....

adding to Ashwin's list...Coupling is Friend's for adults...you will LOVE it, Hitch Hiker's guide yes but not the movie...loved William as a kid

Ashwin said...

actually, Bean and Black Adder are completely different. There's barely any slapstick in Black Adder.

Hitchhiker's guide is an acquired taste. It's disorienting.

Coupling is most definitely better than friends.

Scarlett - Please read at least one PGW before giving it a full miss!!!!!

Knife - maybe ti happens if you read PGW continously one after the other.. whenever i am blue, i read PGW or Enid Blyton.. nothing like these books to make you feel good.

You could try Terry Pratchett.. read one recently Wyrd sisters.. was nice.. a very different kind fo writing!!!

@Moonshine, Knife, Ashwin - OK people, the debate has been brought to a close. And the conclusion is that I'll try the 'Code of Woosters' which I've been told is the first Bertie Jeeves story, and if I like it, I'll continue with PGW. If not, well, there are always other writers.
